How to Set up a Discord Welcome Channel

Who doesn’t love a warm welcome? Today we’ll be talking about how to set up a welcome channel in your Discord server to make new members feel at ease. This article corresponds with several other Discord starter articles we have, including How to Start Your Own Discord Server and How to Add an Announcement Channel in Discord. Definitely give those a read if you’d like to learn more about running a fun and successful Discord server.

How to Make a Welcome Channel

It’s quick and easy to make a welcome channel on Discord. Simply click the plus sign next to the category where you want to place your channel.

Since “Text” is automatically selected, all you have to do is give your channel a name. Naturally, you can name it “welcome,” but feel free to call it something else. The server pictured is a school themed server, so the welcome channel is called “orientation.”

Ideas for Your Welcome Channel

So you have your designated welcome channel, now what should you do with it? Here are some ideas for how to effectively use your welcome channel to create a warm and friendly environment.

MEE6 Bot

The MEE6 Bot is one of, if not the most downloaded bots for Discord. One of MEE6’s specialties is announcing the arrival of a new user who joins the server. Our article on adding bots to Discord will walk you through the process. You can program MEE6 to say whatever welcome message you’d like. Sit back, relax, and let the bots do the work!

Reaction Roles

Reaction roles are a fun and easy way for people in your server to choose their own roles, especially if you have a themed server. For example, a server dedicated to a certain anime or game can have users choose roles based on their favorite character. Other common reaction roles are time zones, streaming platforms, and pronouns. Our article on how to add reaction roles in Discord will tell you everything you need to know.

Self Introduction

A self introduction area as a part of the welcome channel is a great way for members to find common interests. You can set up and pin a template for members to use, including various details such as preferred name, country of residence, favorite food, etc.

Welcome Category

Rather than just a welcome channel, you can set up a welcome or “start here” category for new members. The channel pictured below has such a category, and includes channels for “welcome” (where MEE6 displays its messages), rules, a reaction role channel, self introductions, and a way for users to set their birthdays with Birthday Bot

Welcome Screen

In addition to your welcome channel and/or category, go one step further and add a welcome screen to help new users navigate the server. All you need to do is click on your server name to activate the drop down menu, then click the gear for server settings.

From there, scroll down to “welcome screen” and you can then customize it however you like. There are options to write a short description of your server, as well as recommend channels for new users to visit.
